Creating A Labor Playlist
Hey all this is Hannah! This week I want to talk about creating a pregnancy/labor playlist. My labor playlist was something that during my birth really helped me stay grounded and focused.
I highly recommend that you make a playlist not only for labor but also for your pregnancy. Listen to it often during your pregnancy, your baby can hear the music and it will help their transition into the world. My daughter has a special song that from birth would calm her down almost immediately and still to this day she will fall asleep listening to it. Listening to that playlist is definitely something I wish I did more during my pregnancy because I can see how much of a positive effect it had on my daughter.
I knew going into my birth that I wanted a playlist that would help me keep my mind off the pain of contractions. I put songs on it that I would want to sing along to but that weren’t too upbeat. I also love Disney, so I found acoustic versions of some of my favorite Disney songs and some Disney ride scores. These were some of my favorites to listen to because it really took me to a different place in my mind.
You might even want to make multiple playlists. When I got to the birth center I wasn’t really feeling like listening to the playlist I created so I listened to Taylor Swift for a while (obviously a huge Swiftie, lol). I’m not sure when my mind changed but at some point during my labor I just knew that I needed more calming and uplifting music and that is when we changed it over to the playlist I made.
So what should you put on your playlist? Songs that make you feel loved and happy. Maybe put some songs from your wedding, or songs that hold a special place in your heart. Put songs that you can slow dance to (increase that oxytocin!!!) and songs that you can sing/hum along to. There is no wrong way to make a labor playlist. It is for you and you only, so put whatever your heart desires!
I would also recommend paying for spotify/apple music, there is nothing worse than an ad coming on in the middle of your labor and messing up your rhythm. Most music services will offer a free trial period so if you don’t want to pay for a full subscription that may be a great option!
Don’t forget to have a bluetooth speaker/headphones with you at your place of birth! My favorites are linked below!
Here is a link to both mine and Marlea’s labor playlists if you want some inspiration!
